07.04.2025

A unique collaboration between four companies in the fish industry has borne fruit: the first special batch of Kalaonni Arkinen rainbow trout fillets will be available for two weeks in stores across Finland from April 7th, 2025. The products bear the batch number starting with TRR74 on the package.

Insect protein as a future feed ingredient

Lautasella on lohiannos ja vihanneksia, käsi pitelee haarukkaaThe limited edition of Kalaonni Arkinen fillets is Finnish rainbow trout raised with insect protein. The products result from our cooperation with the insect ingredient producer Volare, fish farming company Kalankasvatus Vääräniemi, and fish wholesaler Kalavapriikki, which started in 2024.

For the first time globally, some traditional rainbow trout feed ingredients are replaced with insect protein. Our partner, Volare, produces insect protein powder by upcycling side streams from the food industry. The rainbow trout are farmed in Taivalkoski by Kalankasvatus Vääräniemi, and Kalavapriikki is responsible for bringing the products to market.

Feed ingredients play an important role in reducing the environmental footprint of aquaculture, so developing sustainable feed based on a circular economy is very timely for Alltech Fennoaqua.

“It is extremely important for us to help move the industry forward sustainably, and we want to be involved in developing future feedstocks. In the future, insect protein could become a key part of sustainable, circular aquafeeds. In Volare’s case, the ingredient is also locally sourced—something we strongly support. Local sourcing not only benefits the environment but also strengthens food self-sufficiency and employment in Finland”, says Tomi Kantola, CEO.

All the companies involved are very pleased with the successful cooperation and are keen to continue and expand it. The trial batch of Kalaonni Arkinen rainbow trout fillets is just the first step in this process.
